LLL of Michigan

La Leche League is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support, and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed.

A Brief Introduction to La Leche League

La Leche League was founded in 1956 by a group of seven women who had learned about successful breastfeeding while nursing their own babies. La Leche League is the only organization with the sole purpose of helping breastfeeding mothers. Now 8,000 Leaders and 3,000 local Groups strong in the United States alone, La Leche League Groups meet regularly in communities worldwide to share breastfeeding information and mothering experience. Telephone counseling is available 24 hours a day, along with access to an extensive library of breastfeeding literature.

Knowing other women who have breastfed their babies can be helpful and reassuring. Having accurate, up-to-date information is also important. Attending La Leche League meetings can help you learn about breastfeeding from other nursing mothers. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns, but also the joys and benefits of breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche League can give you the network of support you need.

We offer support and information through:

  • Mother-to-Mother support
  • Monthly meetings
  • Telephone and e-mail help from accredited Leaders
  • A lending library with literature on common nursing questions and challenges
  • Information about La Leche League International

Leader Information

La Leche League Leaders are experienced mothers who have breastfed their own babies and who have been trained and accredited by La Leche League International to help mothers and mothers-to-be with all aspects of breastfeeding. They are available by phone or e-mail to address your breastfeeding questions or concerns.

For telephone or e-mail help and support, please contact:

Please remember that when you call a Leader, you are calling a private home. If possible try to call between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.; calls of an emergent nature will be taken at any time. If you reach the voice mail, please leave a message so that we can help you! Often we just can't get to the phone quickly enough. Messages and e-mails are always responded to within 24 hours (though generally much less than that).

Meeting Information

All breastfeeding mothers and mothers-to-be interested in breastfeeding are welcome to come to our meetings or contact our Leaders for breastfeeding help or information. Breastfeeding is a simple and natural process, but you may need support. Our meetings provide information on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, working and breastfeeding, avoiding problems, and overcoming any difficulties that may occur. Children of all ages are always welcome at our meetings. Please feel free to bring a healthy snack to share.

When: First Tuesday of the month, 7-9 p.m.
Where: 1894 Millville Road, Lapeer, MI (map)

Meeting topics follow the LLL series meetings with time for general questions, answers, and discussion. The meeting topic for our inaugural meeting in April will be Welcome to La Leche League, How Can We Help You? It will include a brief explanation of the importance and benefits of LLL, and address any questions that you may have. Subsequently, the LLL series meetings are: The Advantages of Breastfeeding, The Family and the Breastfed Baby, The Art of Breastfeeding and Avoiding Difficulties, and Nutrition and Weaning. The specific meeting topics will be tailored to the needs of the group, and all questions will be answered regardless of the monthly topic.
