Parade Float
by Robin Rziha, Great Bend, Kansas LLL Group
For the 2002 World Walk for Breastfeeding, our Great Bend, Kansas Group put together a float for a Labor Day Parade and many of our Group members either rode on the float or walked behind and threw out candy to the spectators.
Our float was made for publicity purposes. Those mothers that participated
in the parade really enjoyed this and our Group was made highly visible. All
the mothers were given the LLL logo shirts to wear the day of the parade and
the children and babies wore the LLL logo hats (they were adorable).
Our float was pulled by an antique tractor, and the banners on the sides of the float read: “LLL of Great Bend: Helping Mothers Grow Their Babies the ‘Old-Fashioned’ Way.” We are in a agriculture community so the banner and tractor went well with the agriculture theme.
The fundraising aspect of this event came from asking for donations prior to the parade and mailing out hundreds of letters to family, friends, and mothers who have benefited from our local LLL Group. (See “Letters to Elicit Contributions” in the fundraising ideas if you would like to see the letter that I used).
