The Importance of the Immune Factors in Breastmilk A discussion of the differences in the adult and neonatal immune system. Participants will learn the components of breastmilk, the importance of antibodies, and examine the latest research on immune response. (CE) Laurie Shornick, LLL Leader and Ph.D. Immunologist FW 2 Figuring Out the Breastfeeding Puzzle on the Phone For Peer counselors, Leader Applicants, newer Leaders, and IBCLC. It’s hard when you don’t see the mother and baby in front of you! Practice asking key questions, reading clues, and solving the puzzle of the lactation problem. This is not a Communication Skills session. Debbi Heffern, LLL Leader, IBCLC FW 3 Feeding Devices and Pumps Demonstrations with doll and samples of various at-breast and away-from-breast feeding devices, including nipple shields. Discussion of various types of pumps with suggestions for appropriate use. (CE) Dee Kassing, Special Guest Speaker, LLL Leader, IBCLCFW 4 Effective Communication and Leadership Learn how we can communicate more effectively during difficult conversations using LLL language and how different leadership and learning styles effect communication. Easy exercises to learn and incorporate into your daily routine. (CE) Richard Prather, D.C. 203 Handling Difficult Situations in a Series Meeting Mother-to-Mother help for LLL Leaders. Heidi Sloss, LLL Leader 204 Making Smocked Bonnets No special skills required. Class size limited to 12 participants 10 and older. Baby or adult bonnets in white will be pre-pleated and ready to smock. Indicate size on your registration form. There is a charge of $7 per bonnet for materials. Jenny Walters and Laura Warren, LLL Leaders 205 Celebrating Pregnancy Through Art Discover the role art can play in self-discovery and preparation for birth and parenting! Each participant will create a symbolic drawing and paint a figurine to keep. Participants do not need to be pregnant to fully enjoy this session and it is suitable for all artistic abilities. There is a charge of $3 for materials. Molly Remer, LLL Leader 206 Wooly Wonder (ages 4 and up, age 3 with adult) From sheep to shining star. Children will create some fun projects with wool by felting and stitching. Enjoy a felt board story as well. 3:30 - 4:45 pm Session III 301 The Importance of Step Ten The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative puts mother support groups last on its list of Ten Steps to Support Breastfeeding. Here’s why it ought to be first. What life is like for a variety of mother and baby mammal pairs and a comparison of the composition of milk.
